- Joanne Storkan is the founder and executive producer of Honest Engine Films, a production company she established in 2004 in Monterey, California. Originally trained as a journalist and English teacher, Storkan transitioned into screenwriting and filmmaking, bringing a strong narrative and character-driven sensibility to her work.
Her filmmaking path led her into the world of lacrosse while researching a coming-of-age screenplay titled STIX. During that process, she connected with coach and former player Tom Ryan and became involved with his short documentary Stir It Up, which explored the culture of the sport. Recognizing the potential for a deeper examination, Storkan started a new feature-length documentary, The Rules of Lacrosse, and the Men Who Break Them.
Storkan previously co-directed the award-winning documentary Dirt McComber: Last of the Mohicans, which received numerous festival honors. Her work consistently focuses on subcultures, personal identity, and the human stories that exist beneath competitive and traditional environments.
