Show business is the only profession I know of where if someone drives you to the job interview (audition) and you get the job they feel entitled to half your paycheck. It's ridiculous.

I was a featured regular on Freaks and Geeks (1999) and Undeclared (2001). I was basically an extra. But no one treated me any differently than anyone else on the show. It was a very good atmosphere on both sets. There were no rules about who you could or couldn't talk to. Judd Apatow was great about that. He had a great personality and so the set had a great personality. Know what I mean? It all trickled down from him. I learned so much just by watching. The truth is we all want our work to be liked. I wrote a film. People liked it, it won some awards and opened a lot of doors for me and I am happy with that. That's all. I didn't cure any major disease. I believe in the power of film but I don't think I can speak about any sort of influence (yet).

One rule I've learned about filmmaking is you rarely get to completely do what you want and that's probably a good thing. I really didn't want to play Nick Anderson (in Anderson's Cross (2010)). Too close to my own life. But I'm glad I did. It changed my life. At least my professional life.
