Brian Jones is a unique figure in the Australian Film Industry. As well as being a filmmaker he has also been a world traveller/adventurer for thirteen years - worked as an economist in Vietnam for an American support company, an investment adviser to International Diplomats in India, a secondary and technical school teacher in London, a prolific-selling painter in Japan and California - with exhibitions in San Francisco and LA. He was a visually experimental film artist whose work on 16mm received recognition at Several major US film festivals. For two years he worked for and was mentored in production and editing by San Francisco documentary film guru Roy Nolan.
In Australia he has been a successful commission only salesman, a kitchen designer, an opal miner and buyer in Lightening Ridge, a clown in Silver's Circus, and more recently a newspaper journalist, a magazine feature writer, and well respected film reviewer on radio and in print.
He established production, post production, and visual effects studio Tantra Films - as writer, director, editor he worked on corporates, commercials, assisted many young filmmakers and became a significant figure in the independent film scene. He was a TAFE film lecturer and instructor (65 short films). At the AFTRS he directed a 25 min short video shot multi cam, Hello and Goodbye with Baz Luhrmann and Mercia Dean Johns.
As writer/director/producer he has three films Mandala, Coming of Age, and For Her Eyes Only, with theatrical - both local and national - release. For Her Eyes Only had it's Australian theatrical premier and video streaming release in 2023.
He was business partner in Mongan's Bridge Movies, developing a slate of projects he had written to pre production with multi award winning producer David Hannay, "a key figure in the rebirth of Australian cinema", before Hannay's death in 2014.
In recent years he has focused on writing. There has been an epic novel opening up his Testament of Skin screenplay, an eighty page volume of poetry, and 'the screenplays'- three, Wonnangatta, Colour of Dream, and The Testament of Skin, developed to final draft with investment by Film Victoria and Screen Australia. He also won a $30,000 National screenplay award for Bridge of Floating Dreams, and high praise in The Australian newspaper from three times Pulitzer winner Edward Albee. Also in development is the completed screenplay Jayda Marrakesh.
