Born in Coventry, he was educated at John Culson Grammar School, Coventry, and won a scholarship to Keele University where he obtained degrees in English and French and a diploma in education. He also won a scholarship to RADA, after which he worked in many repertory companies and a year at the Old Vic, followed by a season doing Shakespeare in Chicago. He was married to Barbara Ann, a former London Palladium dancer and secretary to Cliff Richard and the Shadows. They have two daughters Emma Jane and Sophie Kate.
