A fine Ottocento la Puglia era soggiogata al latifondo del patriziato. I braccianti vivevano in una miseria al limite della sopravvivenza. Nonostante i primi tentativi da parte di alcuni movimenti cittadini di intellettuali e politici per creare fra i contadini una coscienza di classe che potesse far valere i loro diritti contro il baronato, la violenza feudale dei signori della terra impediva qualsiasi rivendicazione sociale. Da questo ambiente di fame e sopraffazione nasceva il brigantaggio, espressione di lotta e rivalsa contro i padroni. Se il malcontento dei braccianti si fosse unito alla rabbia dei briganti, la rivolta poteva divampare come il fuoco in un fienile. Ma spesso la vittima che riesce a conquistare il potere, poi, lo incarna di nuovo come il nemico che poco prima aveva abbattuto.
