The Catholic Hélène offered to become an Anglican so that Albert wouldn't have to forfeit his claim to the throne, but her father would not consent. She ultimately married The Duke of Aosta, cousin of King Victor Emmanuel III. Hélène's grandson is Amedeo Duca D'Aosta.

- On September 10, 1898, he unknowingly escaped assassination by anarchist Luigi Lucheni by leaving Geneva, Switzerland earlier than Lucheni had anticipated. Undaunted, he vowed to kill the first royal he met; the unfortunate royal was Empress Elisabeth, consort of Emperor Franz Josef.
