- Buckmaster was diagnosed with schizophrenia, having his first major psychotic break in 1947, at the age of thirty-two. In 1952, he was arrested for felonious assault and possession of two knives. He died by suicide at Priory Hospital, London, on April 1, 1983.
- John Buckmaster was known to have had an affair with Vivian Leigh at least twice and visited her while she was filming Elephant's Walk in Hollywood in 1953. She had her first psychotic break during this time and Buckmaster attempted to persuade her to fly with him out of a second story window of her rented mansion. Buckmaster's instability caused both David Niven and Stewart Granger to intervene by forcibly separating them.
