Biography

John Flanagan was an Australian author and television writer, best known for creating the internationally bestselling Ranger's Apprentice series and its Brotherband and Royal Ranger spin-offs. He was born in Sydney, Australia.

Flanagan attended Waverley College on an academic scholarship and developed an early interest in writing and music. As a young man, he performed on Sydney's folk music scene with the band The New York Public Library, singing lead vocals and playing guitar, mandolin and banjo, as well as writing songs. He continued playing music throughout his life, although his principal ambition was to become a writer.

He began his professional career as an advertising copywriter at J. Walter Thompson in the 1960s. It was there that he met his future wife, Leonie. They married in 1967 and had three children, Kitty, Penny and Michael. Flanagan subsequently became creative director at Compton before leaving agency employment during the mid-1970s to work freelance, allowing him to spend more time with his children.

Flanagan later moved into television, spending approximately a decade as a scriptwriter, working on and creating television comedies, including the long-running Australian sitcom Hey Dad..! (1987-1994), before eventually returning to freelance copywriting in the late 1990s.

His career as a novelist grew from a series of short stories he had originally written for his son Michael, who was small for his age and had been nicknamed "Flea" by classmates. Wanting to demonstrate to Michael that heroes come in all sizes, Flanagan created Will, a small orphan who becomes the apprentice of the Ranger Halt. Flanagan subsequently developed the stories into the Ranger's Apprentice novels.

The series was first published in Australia in 2004. Its international profile grew substantially after attracting interest in the United States, with the first novel, The Ruins of Gorlan, reaching The New York Times bestseller list in 2006. The success developed into a long-running series encompassing the original Ranger's Apprentice novels, The Royal Ranger continuation and The Early Years prequels.

In 2011, Flanagan introduced Brotherband, a spin-off series set in the same fictional world and centred on a group of young Skandian seafarers. He also wrote for adult readers, including the Jesse Parker novels Storm Peak and Avalanche Pass and the historical nautical novel The Grey Raider. His books collectively sold more than 20 million copies.

Flanagan remained married to Leonie for nearly 59 years. Their eldest daughter, Kitty Flanagan, became a comedian, writer and actress, while their youngest daughter, Penny Flanagan, became a singer-songwriter, novelist and television writer, co-creating and co-writing the comedy series Fisk with her sister. Their son, Michael, established a café business in Japan.

Flanagan died peacefully in February 2026, aged 81, from complications of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. His wife and three children were with him during his final days.
