Biography

Martin Marty was born on February 5, 1928 in West Point, Nebraska, USA. He is known for A Life Apart: Hasidism in America (1997), Frontline (1983) and I Love Liberty (1982). He has been married to Harriet since 1982. He was previously married to Elsa Schumacher.

Professor at the University of Chicago, in the Divinity School and History Department, from 1963-1998; he previously was a Lutheran minister from 1952-1963.

He received the National Humanities Medal in 1997.

Past president of the American Academy of Religion, the American Society of Church History, and the American Catholic Historical Association.
