- Born in Brooklyn, Jo attended the Neighborhood Playhouse, where she studied under Sanford Meisner and with actors Steve McQueen and Peter Falk. As an actress and singer, she began her career as Polly, in the acclaimed, long-running off-Broadway musical "Threepenny Opera". She succeeded Jo Sullivan in the role. She appeared in productions of "Peter Pan" and "Gypsy" in regional theatre, "She Loves" Me" on Broadway, and as Nerissa in Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice", among other roles. She relocated to California where she spent the remainder of her life. She was married to Joel Grey from 1958 until their divorce in 1982; the couple had two children including actress Jennifer Grey.
