Biography

Originally from Washington DC, Lawrence Hughes Stern graduated from Brown University - with a BA degree in Theater Arts. He received his MFA in writing (film, theater, and television) from UCLA -- Summa Cum Laude.

He has received several awards for his writing in all mediums - stage, film, and music. Among them: a Samuel Goldwyn Award, The Steve Lawrence/Eydie Gorme Musical Theater Scholarship - and a couple of other in-house UCLA awards. He has also been a finalist for the Chesterfield Grant (twice), the O'Neill Theater Festival, and semifinalist for the Fade In Awards.

Lawrence is represented as a screenwriter in Los Angeles - at Innovative Artists. He has been hired for many indie writing and rewriting projects, a few of which are now in development. He has also served as a script consultant on a feature that was shot in 2013.

One of Lawrence's award-winning indie dramas, "Intensive Care," is in the process of being packaged - with a great director and producers attached (and Lawrence is serving as co-producer on the film). It was optioned from Lawrence in October 2013. It was also a finalist for the Sundance Lab.

His romantic comedy feature script "Finding Gravity" was optioned in October 2009 - and it has since been re-optioned twice more, most recently in December 2012. There are a director and producer attached now.

Lawrence's new, dark thriller screenplay "Unrelenting" was also optioned in October 2013.

He has recently finished a spec thriller called "Conjugal," which has an indie producer attached already.

He has had three stage shows produced in LA -- one of which was LA Weekly's "Pick of the Week." A couple of years ago, Lawrence placed in the final rounds with two different original songs for the Billboard Magazine Songwriting Awards.

He especially enjoys writing in the drama, comedy, and suspense genres. He has also written and directed two short films, which have played on the festival circuit. Another screenplay of his (a dark comedy called "Childproof") was recently a finalist for the Sundance Lab.

A trained actor and musician, Lawrence has done a great deal of performing on both coasts. He plays piano and sings at private, upscale events and parties in his spare time.
