After his college graduation, Mr. Hoagland did graduate work in Aix-en-Provence, France, and served as a U.S. Air Force intelligence officer in what was then West Germany.
  • He worked for several newspapers in South Carolina before joining the New York Times in Paris as a copy editor on the newspaper's international edition.
