Biography

M-Alain Bertoni

Mini bio

  • Hailing from North Carolina and the Caribbean diaspora, M-Alain Bertoni is a multi-racial non-binary filmmaker who explores concepts of self-identity, doubling, and found/biological family through the cracked lens of genre filmmaking. Their films include No Signal, an experimental film shot on 35mm and Hi-8 Video; Closing Shift, a horror-comedy short inspired by M’s time as a movie theater employee; and The Nile, a soft sci-fi/romance about the unexpected results of an AI dating program.

Their films have screened at Anthology Film Archives, Oxford Film Festival, Panic Fest, and the Chattanooga Film Festival.

M-Alain holds a B.A. in Film and Media Studies from Yale University and an M.F.A. in Creative Producing from UNC School of the Arts. Beyond filmmaking, M has a passion for community engagement and education, which they channel through their participation in the D.O.S.E. Artist Collective and the UNCSA ArtistCorps.
