Biography

  • Miguel Angel Caballero is the son of Mexican immigrant farm workers and an award-winning Queer Mexican-American/Chicano writer, director, and producer. His inspiration for storytelling came at a very young age. Though Miguel's English was limited, he enjoyed making up storylines in real time as he interpreted reruns of "Little House On The Prairie" for his grandma. Much later, he received his bachelor's degree in Theater from the School of Theater, Film & Television at UCLA. As a former actor, he gained a profound understanding of the intricacies of character development and emotional nuances and the collaborative nature of filmmaking. This experience has been instrumental in shaping him into a more empathetic, communicative, and nuanced Director today. One of his strengths is collaborating with and guiding the actors to mine and explore the emotional arcs of their characters.

His films have collectively garnered 47 awards and recognitions. His latest sci-fi short, THE BALLAD OF TITA AND THE MACHINES, executive produced by Lena Waithe, premiered at the Tribeca Festival in 2023, screened at TIFF (Rising Voices), and won the Humanitas Award and the Latinx Award at Holly Shorts. His short, ACUITZERAMO, premiered at the Morelia International Film Festival and won 21 awards internationally, including the Imagen Award. His film, BROKEN SUNFLOWER HEARTS, was named by Remezcla Magazine as one of the year's 'Best Short Films' by U.S. Latino directors.

The Library of Congress has officially recognized his three short films (Broken Sunflower Hearts, Acuitzeramo, The Ballad of Tita and the Machines), listing them in its "Latinx Representation in Film" in the Library of Congress Research Guide, cementing their cultural and historical significance in Latinx cinema.

Miguel Angel is a Film Independent Project Involve and Fast Track Fellow and an Academy Gold Alumni from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. His feature film screenplay, ANGEL IN RETROGRADE, was 1 of 5 selected for the Tribeca Untold Stories. He is the winner of the Humanitas New Voices Award (2023-2024) and was named by the International Screenwriters Association (ISA ) as one of the top 25 screenwriters to watch. Miguel Angel and his writing partner, Luis Antonio Aldana, are currently adapting a sci-fi novel for TV for Ley Line Entertainment (Everything Everywhere All At Once).
