- Karnell's first feature film release arrived in a supporting role as Cage in Camel Spiders (2011, Anchor Bay), executive produced by Roger Corman (2009 Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement). Notable short films include: Autonomy (2006), Doubt, The Thief (168 Hour Film Festival Best Short Film 2006), Real Estate Super Man (168 Hour Film Festival Audience Choice Award 2007) and Anamnesis (2012). Matthews has strutted on the small screen playing colorful Guest Starring roles in comedy pilots, such as Crime Solvers (K. David Bena, 2012) and Juan Carlos: (Wedding) Video Stylist (Jared Bentley, Los Angeles Cinema Festival of Hollywood Merit Award 2012).
Matthews made his Los Angeles theatre debut in Noel Coward's Easy Virtue (2006), as the callow Philip Bordon. He landed the coveted role of the sexy and seductive Hal Carter in William Inge's Pulitzer Prize winning play Picnic (2007). Karnell captivated audiences with his performance in Waleed Issa's Reflection Of My Soul (2008). Matthews embraced his first contemporary play experience in The Rainbow Room (2010) with solid reviews as the emotionally challenged Ben. Additional stage productions include: Obamanologues, Journey To The White House (2010) and Karnell's first musical, as the title character Rocky, in The Rocky Horror Show (Stage Scene LA Scenie Award (2010 - 2011) Best Featured Ensemble Cast Performance/Musical)
