Biography

Was the head of the official Story Team for The LEGO Company's Bionicle toy franchise from 2000 until leaving in 2005. After Bob's departure, some of his original ideas about the storyline were done away with -- for instance, he always equated each of Bionicle's sagas to "books" (much like the famous cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)), and wanted it to last for seven books as a whole. This concept was dropped when he left, and some of his other story ideas have also gotten neglected. For example, he imagined a quirky character called Kapura to be able to go very fast by walking slow. The rest of the Story Team never understood how this worked, so Kapura's ability was never touched upon again.

Left the LEGO Company in 2005, where he had worked as a creative consultant, media manager and story writer, and went on to found Good Story Productions.

Fan of extreme sports. His enthusiasm for surfing and fear of crashing waves inspired the scene in Bionicle 2: Legends of Metru Nui (2004) where the heroes race across a sea of metal pillars rising from the ground.

Thomson had been highly sought after by the Bionicle fan community for nearly two decades. Following numerous public appearances and statements related to the franchise's marketing up until 2004, Thomspon left the LEGO Company and became an elusive person whose contributions and original ideas for the Bionicle franchise were endlessly discussed by the fanbase. He finally reached out to the fan community in 2021, on the "810nicle Day" online celebration held on August 10, commemorating the franchise's 20th anniversary. On the event, Thompson answered fan questions and gave clarifications about his work on the Bionicle brand.
