Biography

During his career he received around 600 stitches, most of them on his face.

Pictured on one of six Canada commemorative postage stamps issued 24 January 2004 honoring living hockey players. Stamps were issued in booklet form and in a single souvenir sheet. Other players honored were Johnny Bower, Brad Park, Larry Robinson, Marcel Dionne, and Milt Schmidt.

Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, 1966.

In 1,068 regular season games, he scored 379 goals and had 472 assists for 851 points. He had 47 goals for 96 points in 133 playoff games. When he retired for the first time in 1960, the only players who had more points were Gordie Howe and Montreal's Maurice (The Rocket) Richard.

He played for 14 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings and three seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks between 1944 and 1965. During his career with the Red Wings, they won 10 league championships and four Stanley Cups.
