Biography

Johny Bower is a Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame goaltender who won four Stanley Cups during his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 2017 he was named one of the "100 Greatest NHL Players" in history.

Bower made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the New York Rangers Hockey Team in 1953-54, at the age of 29. Bower played in all 70 games that season and recorded 29 wins. Bower won his first Vezina Trophy in 1961 for allowing the fewest goals in the 1960-61 season. The height of his NHL career came during the Maple Leafs' three consecutive Stanley Cup victories from 1962 to 1964.

Pictured on one of six Canada commemorative postage stamps issued 24 January 2004 honoring living hockey players. Stamps were issued in booklet form and in a single souvenir sheet. Other players honored were Brad Park, Larry Robinson, Marcel Dionne, Ted Lindsay, and Milt Schmidt.

He was a Hall-of-Fame goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He helped the Leafs win four Stanley Cups, after joining the team at age 35. He was always the oldest player on the Leafs, and was the oldest in the NHL for his final 10 seasons. He was also well-known for his charity work.

During WWII, at age 15, he lied about his age to enlist, and served in England for four years. He was discharged in 1944 because of rheumatoid arthritis.

At the time of his death, he still held the AHL record for most shutouts (45) and most wins (359 in 592 games).
