- Steppenwolf is a Canadian-American rock band, formed in late 1967 in Los Angeles. Steppenwolf has sold over 25 million records worldwide, released eight gold albums and 12 Billboard Hot 100 singles, of which six were top 40 hits, including three top 10 successes: "Born to Be Wild", "Magic Carpet Ride", and "Rock Me". Steppenwolf enjoyed worldwide success from 1968 to 1972, but clashing personalities led to the end of the core lineup. Today, John Kay is the only original member, having served as the lead singer since 1967.

- While they recorded over a dozen studio albums, only two of their songs are widely well known: "Born to Be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride".
- The group started out in Toronto as the Sparrows. After landing a deal with Columbia Records, they spent time in New York and then went out west to the San Francisco Bay area and Los Angeles, where they broke up and reformed as Steppenwolf.
- The group's original lineup consisted of the late Jerry Edmonton (drums), John Kay (vocals), Goldy McJohn (keyboards), Michael Monarch (guitar and vocals), and the late Rushton Moreve (bass and vocals). Other members included Brett Tuggle.
- They also had some success with their hit cover of Hoyt Axton's "The Pusher," "Rock Me," "Straight Shootin' Woman" and "Move Over.".
