- She worked at the forefront of the civil rights movement alongside her husband, the Rev. Ralph Abernathy, and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. She survived a bombing of the family's home in Montgomery, Ala., in 1957. The Baptist church where her husband was a pastor was destroyed by a bomb the same night.
- She graduated from Tennessee State University. She taught high school business classes and was a secretary for the Alabama chapter of the NAACP. She was also a national sales director for Mary Kay Cosmetics, and helped found a Quaker Friends school in Atlanta. She lobbied for the national food-stamp program and free school meals for needy students.
