She was one of seven children - Thomas Samuel Schutte, Ralph E Schutte, Leslie George Schutte, Barbara Jensen, Gloria Bareford and Harold D Schutte. Her parents were aged 28 (Frederick George Schutte) and 22 ( Elsie Jennie Brewster).
She married Desmond T. Doss on 17 August 1942, in Richmond, Virginia, United States. She lived in Manchester, Chesterfield, Virginia, United States in 1930 and Walker, Georgia, United States in 1991.
Schutte appeared in the 1959 episode of Desmond Doss (1959) , about the life of his son Desmond T. Doss .
She was portrayed by Teresa Palmer in the 2016 Mel Gibson movie Hacksaw Ridge (2016).
