Biography

Kurnia Alexander

Overview

  • Height
    5′ 7¾″ (1.72 m)

Mini bio

  • Ever since he was mesmerized by the world he was sucked into when he watched Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone at the age of 6, Kurnia Alexander had always known that he wanted to be a filmmaker. Accompanying his mother to DVD rentals and going to internet cafes not to play online games, but to look up movie information would soon become his regular activities.

Kurnia started making movies in elementary school, using Windows Movie Maker to edit, even though he rarely finished them. He got into Universitas Indonesia to study English Literature where he took a class about Hollywood which would provide him with an opportunity to make his first short film. Since then, Kurnia's college friends started to make him their "designated filmmaker" until he eventually won his first film competition at his Faculty's Olimpiade Budaya for his short "Ada yang Salah dengan Ray".

After college, Kurnia continued creating short films released mostly on YouTube and Viddsee such as "Pada Ambang", "Andai", and "Mitos Kampus". Kurnia also started to meet other people with similar interests through social media. Among them are Azzam Fi Rullah and Alzein Putra Merdeka, an underground directing duo from Kolong Sinema. Kurnia eventually produced five of their short films including "Kesurupan Erotik", "Sebuah Film Karya Setan", "Noda Ranjang Membekas", "Kuburan Berjalan", and "Anak Haram Pantai Selatan".

As a queer man, Kurnia began to incorporate that aspect of himself in his works after he finally decided to fully embrace it. Starting from "Virtual Buddy with Kevin", Kurnia created the character Kevin, a queer guy who comes to terms with his sexuality as he begins a video call service where he befriends people who are feeling lonely in the pandemic. With his recent short, "Dan Bahagia", Kurnia is looking to further establish himself as a filmmaker with a heart.
