Biography

Baha Men is a Bahamian musical group known for their vibrant sound and cultural significance. Formed in 1977 in New Providence, Bahamas, the band originally started as High Voltage, performing disco and funk music in local nightclubs and hotels. Their early experiences were deeply influenced by the rich cultural heritage of the Bahamas, particularly the traditional junkanoo festival, which infused their music with rhythmic melodies and communal spirit.

In the early 1990s, after catching the attention of Atlantic Records A&R man Steve Greenberg, the band changed its name to Baha Men. They released their debut album, *Junkanoo*, in 1992, which included the local hit "Back to the Island." Their follow-up album, *Kalik*, released in 1994, featured the international hit "Dancing in the Moonlight," helping to establish their presence beyond Bahamian borders.

The band's breakthrough came with their 2000 remake of "Who Let the Dogs Out," originally written by Trinidadian musician Anslem Douglas. Produced by Greenberg and Michael Mangini, this catchy anthem became a global sensation, earning them a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording in 2001 and numerous accolades, including Billboard Music Awards and Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.

Throughout their career, Baha Men has been recognized not only for their chart-topping hits but also for their contributions to popular culture. Their music has been featured in various films such as *Shrek*, *Miss Congeniality*, and *Lilo & Stitch*. The band has undergone several lineup changes over the years but continues to perform and record new music, with their most recent album, *Ride With Me*, released in 2015.
