Tony Thompson (b. Nov. 15, 1954) died from renal cancer on Nov. 12, 2003, at age 48.

The term Cancelling (and dubious related terms like Cancel Culture), referring to criticizing or shaming of public figures via online social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, is believed to have originated from Chic's song "Your Love is Cancelled." The term in its 2010s and 2020s form, meaning to upend the reputation or success of a public figure is very different from how it is used in the song; in "Your Love is Cancelled," the speaker is stating that their romantic interest has disappointed them, and that hope for any future interest or affection is completely gone.
