Trivia

  • Paolo Bediones is a grandnephew to the late former Philippines president Ferdinand Marcos (1965 to 1986) and nephew of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (2022-2028). His maternal grandmother Fortuna Marcos-Barba was the sister of Marcos Sr.
  • Paolo Bediones was victimized by blackmailer/s who leaked a private, intimate videos after he refused to give 3 million Philippines pesos ($67,570 USD) extortion money. In 2010, Bediones and his then-girlfriend recorded a private video on his personal laptop. Bediones eventually deleted the file. Bediones brought the laptop to a store for a battery replacement and malware repair. The shop outsourced the work to a market where someone dug into the hard drive's storage cache to retrieve deleted files. For four to five years, the perpetrators blackmailed and threatened Bediones, demanding up to 3 million Philippines pesos to keep the footage hidden. The popular TV news anchor refused to give the money. On July 27, 2014, the extortionists carried out their threat and uploaded the explicit video onto social media. A second segment of the private video was leaked shortly after in August 2014. His network at the time, TV5, strongly supported him. They publicly defended Bediones, stating that it was a purely personal, private matter and condemned the malicious publication as a clear violation of cybercrime laws. In August 2015, Bediones publicly broke his silence regarding the incident. He apologized to his family and supporters for the disappointment, while rightly maintaining that recording an intimate video with a consenting partner was not a crime, but a private act that was criminally stolen from him. He also expressed profound sorrow for the female partner who was dragged into the public eye. Bediones heavily stepped back from the newsroom during the immediate fallout to focus on entrepreneurial ventures, opening several restaurants. In retrospective interviews, he shared that practicing Stoicism helped him cope with the trauma, shame, and public scrutiny. He eventually used his experience to advocate against cyber-voyeurism and digital extortion.
