Biography

He has two brothers and two sisters. His parents emigrated from Crossmolina, County Mayo, Ireland in the early 1950s

Before achieving fame in Dexys Midnight Runners, he was a member of an art-rock band called Lucy And The Lovers, who were heavily influenced by Deaf School. The band turned into a punk rock outfit called The Killjoys.

Kevin Rowland was (and is) the effective leader and singer for the popular '80s band Dexys Midnight Runners.

In Dexys, we rehearsed all day every day for six months. When we weren't rehearsing, I was writing. We worked really hard. Then, people came to us, because we were good. It's as simple as that.

In my opinion, "This Is What She's Like". The record company were prepared to release it as a 12" - the whole version - but I said no. That's another example of me being stupid and belligerent for all the wrong reasons. It was fear, really. And I think "Knowledge & Beauty" is a great song, too. (When asked what he thought was his best song)

I've no plans to do another album of covers, but I still think it was really overlooked. Worse, it was ridiculed. I don't think most journalists could get past the image. They were more interested in how the album was doing than the music. I saw something in another magazine which said it sold 562 copies. Do you want to know how many it actually sold? Twenty thousand. If anyone's got any doubts about the quality of the music on My Beauty they should listen to "The Greatest Love Of All" or "Reflections Of My Life". It's a good album, it really is.
