Biography

Dan Harmon was born on January 3, 1973 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. He is best known as the creator, writing, and producer for Community (2009) and Rick and Morty (2013). He also is known for writing and producing earlier works such as Computerman (2003), and Laser Fart (2004). He was previously married to Erin McGathy.

Was inspired to create Community (2009) after he took classes at a community college when he was trying to break into comedy.

Devised a storytelling structure for episodic television shows called the "Story Circle" technique wherein characters go through eight phases in the plot.

In 2018, on an episode of his podcast, "Harmontown," Dan Harmon offered a public apology to Megan Ganz, who had been a staff writer on Community. Harmon admitted that he sexually harassed Ganz, tried to gaslight her into believing it wasn't happening, and then retaliated against her professionally when she made it clear she had no romantic interest in him. As part of his apology (which was nearly eight minutes long), he said with contrition, " I certainly wouldn't have been able to do it if I had any respect for women." The public radio program "This American Life" aired a segment on May 10, 2019, dedicated to the incident.
