Fritz von Opel was born on 4 May 1899 in Rüsselsheim. He was married to Emita Herrán Olozaga and Margot von Opel div. Sellnick née Löwenstein. He died on 8 April 1971 in Samedan, Graubünden, Switzerland.
His second wife was Emita Herrán Olozaga, daughter of Rafael Bernando Herrán Echeverri and Lucia Olozaga. Emita's sister María Eugenia Adelaida Herrán Olozaga (1918-1964) was the stepmother of Carlo von Opel.
