Biography

Marco Melgar (Lima, 1976) is a director, screenwriter, and producer at Innova Films. He studied film at the University of Lima and performing arts at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. In 2013, he received a scholarship from CINESCOPE. This year, he is completing his master's degree in Advanced Cinematography Studies at the International University of Rioja in Spain.

Between 2018 and 2019, he attended the Film Directing Workshop with Luis Mandoki and the Master Class with Guillermo Arriaga, as well as the discussion between Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón, "Monsters and Silences: Narrative for a Turbulent Century."

In 2015, Mujer Jaguar, a feature film project in development, was selected for the 11th Co-Production Forum at the Guadalajara International Film Festival - Mexico and for the Latin American fantasy film market Blood Window at Ventana Sur - Argentina, created by INCAA and the Cannes Film Festival.

2021, Sonata en Plenilunio, a feature film project in development, was selected for the Cinefilia Screenplay Laboratory in Colombia. And in 2022, it won the Projects in Development Competition and received financial support from the Ministry of Culture in Peru. In 2025, he was the screenwriter, director, and co-producer of Un Mezcal con la Muerte, co-produced with Totem México and Kinoskop Studio. It was a finalist at the Successful Quitters Film Festival - USA and fourth finalist at the Kobani International Film Festival - Germany; it was selected at Monfilmfest - Italy, Giochi Di Cinema Senza Frontiere - Italy, and Lift-Off Global Network UK.

In 2024, he was the screenwriter, director, and co-producer of Reborn, an experimental animated short film co-produced with Totem México, participating in The Rivers International Film Festival - Nigeria, Lift-Off Sessions - UK, and First Time Filmmaker Sessions in England.

In 2023, he co-produced Day & Night by Le Phuong and Paul Martínez, USA and Mexico, currently in post-production.

In 2022, he was screenwriter, director, and co-producer of Lola, participating in the Clapperboard Golden Festival - Brazil, Festival del Cinema di Cefalú - Italy, One Earth Awards - India, and Paus Premieres Festival - UK.

In 2021, he was the screenwriter, director, and co-producer of Re-Version, which won the Best Director award at the Berlin Short Award and the Istanbul Film Festival - Turkey. It received an honorable mention at the Screen Power Film Festival in London, was featured at the Lisbon Film Rendezvous, was a semifinalist at the Di Cefalù Film Festival - Italy, and was a finalist at the Flickfair Film Festival. He was associate producer on Andrés Durán Moreno's documentaries: Lets leave at least Songs was a finalist at the International Film Festival of Educational Films and Innovative Content - Russia, participated in the Clapperboard Golden Festival - Brazil, the Golden FEMI Film Festival - Bulgaria, and the Meihodo International Youth Visual Media Festival - Japan. In 2017, he was producing and directing the documentary Music from Inside about street musicians in Berlin.

In 2014, he was the screenwriter, director, and producer of Leyendas Urbanas - Extraño Hombre, participating in Terror Fest Peru, the IV International Fantasy and Horror Film Festival of Navarra, the Phoenix Film Festival Melbourne, and the 10th Filmocortos del Festival de Cine de Lima.

In 2013-2014, he was the screenwriter and director of the documentary Yumi, Agua es vida. It received an honorable mention at the Encuentro Hispanoamericano De Cine y Video Documental "Contra El Silencio Todas Las Voces" in Mexico and at the 8th Festival Internacional De Cine Invisible Film Sozialak Bilbao, and was a semifinalist at the Festival Internacional De Cine Abierto Creative. It was selected for the Film and Documentary Festival for the Recovery of Community Assets, the 6th Ibero-American Film Festival Colombia, Sembrando Cine Peru, the Cuzco International Short Film Festival, the 5th Peruvian Short Film Festival in Lambayeque, the 9th Indigenous Film and Video Exhibition, the 12th Social Film Exhibition "La Imagen Del Sur" in Chile, and the 9th International Documentary Video Festival Globale in Bogotá.

2012, directed the video art for Claudia Sacha's play Naturaleza Muerta, produced by Innova Films.

In 2005, he was the screenwriter and director of Aura, winner of the III PUCP Audiovisual Projects Competition, produced by Azulebano Producciones, and was featured in La Noche de los cortos en Europa.

In 2003, he was the screenwriter and director of Tiempo Espiral, winning first place at the I APFACOM Festival, a special mention at the II Ibero-American University Festival, and participating in the Barcelona Independent Film Festival and the 2nd film exhibition in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

In 2001, he was art director for Silencio de Alonso Mayo, produced by Manzana Azul. Winner of the Robert Altman Prize Kansas City and Filmmakers Jubilee.

In 2000, he was the screenwriter and director of Un Cariño Deseado (A Desired Affection) and director of La línea (The Line), both at the University of Lima.

In 1999, he was the art director for Melina León's 48 Para Los Gastos del Mes (48 For Monthly Expenses), which won the award for best short film from Conacine - Peru.
