  • This shy Angelino grew up in the outskirts of Chinatown, Echo Park. As a child, Huy Chheng knew she wanted to pursue arts, which developed into a passion for filmmaking after taking her first course at the University of California, Los Angeles. Since then, filmmaking and finding funding for her movies have been Huy's ongoing mission.

    Besides nurturing her filmmaking career, Huy Chheng also does event-planning, community organizing, youth mentoring, and teaching. Huy has combined her storytelling skills and her work, teaching middle school and college students about filmmaking.

    Huy Chheng completed her Master's Degree in Film Studies at University of California, Los Angeles in 2006. She has also directed several shorts, documentaries, and feature films that has screen at several film festivals.

    Her first feature film, Sweet and Sour, a coming of age drama about three best-friends of Los Angeles' Chinatown, who drift apart as they diverge their paths into adulthood, tearing them apart and bringing them back together. The film was among the selected few to be screened by the China Institute in the summer of 2003. In addition to the screening, Huy was also offered to study abroad at the China Film Institute. A wonderful offer but she had to decline and opted for the UCLA Graduate Program.

    Currently, Huy is wrapping up her second feature, Dead Trees, a psychological thriller. She is soon set to direct a feature documentary project; a short action film, Angel; and co-write, co-produce, and direct a feature narrative entitled, A Pair of Doves.
