She had previously been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 1993. Despite her long struggle with the illness, she graduated from college and received a doctorate in public health from Wonkwang University in 2010 with a thesis titled 'The Effect of Integrated Arts Therapy on the Post-Traumatic Self-Identity, Self-Esteem, and Self-Control of North Korean Defectors'.

Lee Joo Shil was a South Korean stage, movie and TGV-actress. Lee took on a role in Netflix's highly anticipated Squid Game 2 as Park Mal Soon, the mother of Hwang Jun Ho (played by Wi Ha Joon) and stepmother of Hwang In Ho (played by Lee Byung Hun).

Lee began her career in 1964 and gained recognition as both a voice actress and an on-screen performer. She started in the industry through TBC's second voice acting class in 1965, later expanding her career into television and film.

Lee Joo Shil debuted as a stage actress in 1965, actively appeared on stage, appearing in about 200 works, including 'Death of a Salesman' and 'Macbeth'.

Lee Joo Shil won the Best Supporting Actress Award at the 2023 Wildflower Film Festival.
