Biography

Emmy®-nominated Richard Slater-Jones is a director and producer of prime-time documentary specials and series for the likes of National Geographic, BBC, Smithsonian Channel, PBS, Animal Planet, and others. His films and series have gone on to be broadcast in most territories worldwide, from Arte to Netflix to ZDF, reaching over a hundred million of households.

Richard was also a pioneer in the early days of YouTube with a daring online science series that he created, wrote and directed for EarthTouch.TV (2012). Together with host and co-writer Dr Carin Bondar - Biologist with a Twist - and producer Ben Hewett, they scared the bejeesus out of TV execs. The series went on to garner tens of millions of views within weeks of its release on YouTube, reaching hundreds of millions after that.

Broadcast projects include mission-critical special, Gorillas of Gabon (2018), for Smithsonian Channel; Snake City (2016, 2017), the hit series for NatGeoWild for which he was also showrunner; feature doc, Naledi (2015), on Netflix; the ambitious mini-series Gorongosa: Birth of Paradise (2014) for PBS and NatGeo; natural history drama, Blood River Crossing (2013), a darker look at the infamous wildebeest migrations, eliciting industry response: "Probably the best natural history footage I have ever seen in single hour"; and the multiple award-winning specials Saving Rhino Phila (2011) and All the Presidents Elephants (2011).

Richard continues to create impactful documentaries that strive to make a difference... and be different. Stories that resonate. Above all, stories that entertain. But these days he spends most of his time exploring universal truths through engaging narrative fiction that transcends national boundaries and culture barriers.

When not chasing content in the jungles of Brazil, volcanoes of the Comoros, or edit suites of New York, Washington D.C. and Bristol, Richard writes dystopian thrillers in Rome, whilst learning life lessons from his children Ona, Wolf and Giacomo.
