Luc Decaster was brought up in Saint-Nazaire, the French capital of
naval shipyards. As a teenager, he prepared a boiler maker's vocational
diploma and he was marked by the conflicts between the shipyard workers
and the riot police. Having become a design draftsman at Chausson in
the Paris area, Decaster discovered the working conditions in the motor
industry. At the same time he started studying history and specialized
in the labor movement. He became a history teacher in 1976. Later on,
he set about studying film making and finally gave up teaching in 1991
to direct documentaries. His best one, "Rêve d'usine" about the closing
of a factory, won the Great Prize at the Festival International du Film
d'Environnement.
