Biography

Clara Van Severen is a writer & director from Brussels, Belgium. She studied filmmaking at KASK School of Arts in Ghent, from which she graduated with a Master’s degree in 2023. She has since been working as a director, assistant director, casting director & extras coordinator on Belgian and international film productions.

In her creative process, she starts from a personal experience wherein she finds the universal component, to then develop it into something a broader public can identify with. Her work is identifiable through character-driven narratives and a focus on experiences and emotions. She often collaborates with artists from other media such as music and dancing, whether by directing work for them or giving them a central place in her own films.

Convinced of the ability that films have to provoke societal change by shifting the viewer’s subjectivity, she uses her medium’s double status as both art and entertainment in an effort to reach a broader audience, giving them the opportunity to perceive the world through someone else’s eyes. In this way, her focus is on combining the artistic, the emotional and the socio-political in work that is as meaningful & relevant as it is enjoyable.
