Biography

Tina Gharavi is a Sundance and BAFTA-nominated writer, director and show-runner. Initially trained as a painter in the United States before studying cinema in France, she is known for fearless, boundary-crossing work centred on outsiders, rebels and misfits.

Her acclaimed debut feature, I Am Nasrine, earned a BAFTA nomination. She has since directed high-end television, including Sky’s The Tunnel, and helmed the Netflix docudrama Queen Cleopatra, produced by Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios. She is also developing an original episodic series set between Paris and Iceland, in partnership with Gaumont.

Gharavi’s third feature, Virginia Woolf’s Night & Day, was released in 2026 to critical acclaim. Peter Bradshaw described it as "guilelessly eccentric, a butterfly fluttering just beyond the wheel of realism," while Wendy Ide in The Telegraph called it "a delight: a spirited and slightly quirky tale of female empowerment." Like much of Gharavi’s work, it is a quietly rebellious film.

She is currently working on Häxan, a Swedish lesbian horror film funded by musician and activist Moby, alongside a more reflective biopic of the radical Iranian poet and filmmaker Forough Farrokhzad, executive produced by Wes Anderson.

Gharavi divides her time between the North of England and Paris. She is represented as a director and screenwriter by Laura Rourke at Independent Talent in the UK, Sean Barclay at Gersh in the US, and Valéry Guibal and Leela Issa at Film Talent in France.
