Biography

  • Ron Truppa is an American producer, entrepreneur, and nonprofit executive best known as the founder and executive director of the Catalina Film Institute and Catalina Film Festival. Over more than 25 years in the entertainment industry, his work has encompassed film and television production, live events, arts education, strategic partnerships, and the advancement of independent storytellers.

A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Truppa earned a degree in Marketing from Providence College, combining his interests in entrepreneurship, leadership, and the performing arts.

He began his entertainment career as an actor, working in film, television, commercials, and theatre throughout New England and Los Angeles. His early work included an appearance on the NBC series Providence (1999) and performances at venues including the Tony Award-winning Trinity Repertory Company and Boston Playwrights’ Theatre. After relocating to Los Angeles, he studied with acclaimed acting coach John Kirby before expanding into writing, directing, producing, and live-event development.

Truppa later founded Truppa Entertainment, producing independent film and television projects, documentaries, commercials, music videos, premieres, and entertainment events. Working across performance, production, marketing, and event execution led to a broader professional focus: building the relationships, infrastructure, and opportunities that help creative work reach audiences and creative careers move forward.

In 2010, Truppa founded the nonprofit Catalina Film Institute around the philosophy of "Imagination. Education. Destination." Under his leadership, the Catalina Film Festival has grown into an internationally recognized destination for independent cinema, ranking among FilmFreeway’s Top 1% best-reviewed festivals. It has also been recognized by MovieMaker Magazine among the "50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee" and "20 Great Film Festivals in Vacation Destinations."

Beyond producing an annual festival, Truppa has spent more than 15 years building an entertainment ecosystem that brings together filmmakers, actors, executives, educators, distributors, sponsors, nonprofit organizations, civic and tourism leaders, and audiences. The platform supports both established and emerging artists through exhibition, education, industry access, collaboration, and professional development.

Truppa continues to develop film, television, educational, and live-event initiatives while expanding strategic partnerships across the entertainment, nonprofit, business, and tourism sectors. His work is focused on building sustainable creative institutions that connect talent with opportunity, strengthen communities, and move meaningful stories from imagination to audience.
