- Made major league debut on 19 April 1886.
- Manager of the Baltimore Orioles (1902) and Brooklyn dodgers (1914-1931).
- Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945.
- Was one of 5 future Hall of Famers on the 1900 St. Louis Cardinals. Jesse Burkett, John J. McGraw, Bobby Wallace, and Cy Young are the others.
- Interred in New Cathedral Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland.
