Mini bio

  • Joe Stapleton is an American comedian and poker commentator. He's most well known for injecting his style of irreverent humor into hundreds of live and televised poker broadcasts, but is also a talented stand-up comedian, host, actor, and writer.

Until the global pandemic, 2020 was shaping up to be a banner year for Stapleton. In addition to poker commentary, he had served two years alongside the legendary Norm Macdonald as his road opener, worked as a poker consultant to the also-legendary writer/director Paul Schrader on his film "The Card Counter," and featured in a Wild Cherry Pepsi commercial directed by the (you guessed it) yes-also-legendary Joseph Kahn.

  • After graduating college at Boston University and immediately moving to Los Angeles to pursue the nebulous career of "comedy," Joe Stapleton quickly landed the coveted job of production assistant on a long-running sketch comedy series: "MADtv."

The job provided invaluable industry experience and friendships with the likes of Ike Barinholtz, Jordan Peele, Keegan-Michael Key (who gave him the nickname "Stapes"), and Bobby Lee - who forced him to do stand-up comedy for his very first time.

During this time there, he and his friends discovered poker - more specifically No Limit Texas Hold 'em - and after spending a summer interning at Card Player Magazine as a tournament reporter, Stapes was off to the races in his new career combining comedy and cards.

After being handed the reigns of his very own comedy/poker podcast, Joe left MADtv to pursue poker media opportunities full time. A few podcasts and a few years later, he was given the opportunity to work in front of the camera as host of the new FOX syndicated poker show "The Big Game."

What followed was a decade of various poker television shows and broadcasts filmed around the world, with Joe being nominated for and winning various awards along the way. During stints residing in London and New York, he used this time to hone his stand-up comedy chops, and eventually after moving back to LA in 2016, Joe had the honor of befriending and performing alongside the legendary comedian Norm Macdonald as his road opener until the 2020 pandemic.

Not satisfied with TV and a few small commercial parts, Stapes figured out a way to "bluff" his way onto the silver screen as well, serving as "poker consultant" on the 2021 Paul Schrader film "The Card Counter."

As of 2022, Joe resides in Los Angeles, California, but still travels the world covering poker for PokerStars and the European Poker Tour. He's written a comic book loosely based on his life, which will be released in 2023.
