- Was Canada's first television weatherman and the first person to appear on Canadian television. He was the face of Canadian network CBC when it launched English language broadcasting in Canada on September 8, 1952.
- He attended the University of British Columbia, and studied medicine at McGill University. He became a meteorologist in 1943, and served in the British Commonwealth Air Training program during WWII.
- In addition to weather forecasting, he became a TV interviewer and commentator. He participated in CBC-TV's coverage of the first moon walk in 1969.
- Saltzman gave TV weather reports from memory, with no notes or teleprompter. He was the first Canadian weatherman to use radar and satellite imagery, and the first to report on road conditions and forest fires.
- He was awarded the C.M. (Member of the Order of Canada) on May 1, 2002 for his services to communications in Canada.
