- Former Chief of Staff of the Army of the Republika Srpska during the Bosnian War.
- On May 2, 2011, he was arrested for war crimes committed during the Bosnian War in the early 1990s. At that time he was residing in the Serbian town of Lazarevo, east of Zrenjanin. The arrest went without incident, as Mladic surrendered himself and two pistols that he carried.
- His father was a Bosnian Serb partisan killed during World War 2.
- His daughter, Ana, committed suicide in the Serbian capital of Belgrade in 1994.
- Is accused of responsibility for the near four-year-long siege of Sarajevo, during which nearly 10,000 people died. He is also accused of being responsible for the massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica in the summer of 1995.
