    • The Benz

Mini bio

  • Leslie Benzies is a Scottish video game producer and executive best known as a primary architect of the modern Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series. As the longtime president of Rockstar North, he oversaw the development of the franchise’s most iconic titles, including GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA V.

Benzies began his career at DMA Design (which later became Rockstar North), where his leadership on GTA III helped revolutionise open-world gaming. He was a driving force behind the series' transition to 3D and was later instrumental in the creation of GTA Online, which became one of the most successful entertainment products in history. For his contributions to the industry, he was inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame and received a BAFTA Special Award.

After departing Rockstar Games in 2016, Benzies founded the independent studio Build A Rocket Boy. Under this new venture, he led the development of the ambitious open-world platform Everywhere and the cinematic action game MindsEye. His work continues to focus on pushing the boundaries of player freedom and community-driven content.

Trivia

  • The "Godzilla" Origin of GTA III: Grand Theft Auto III actually began as a prototype for a Godzilla-style monster game. After earlier GTA games saw disappointing sales, Benzies and his team were encouraged to incorporate that 3D prototype into what became the industry-changing GTA III.
  • Community Preservation: In 2014, he purchased the historic St Stephen's Church in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, for over £500,000. He did so to protect the building from private developers and preserve it for the local community.
  • Unique Recognition: His name typically appears first in the ending credits of the Grand Theft Auto games he produced, a nod to his massive influence on the series' creative and technical direction.
  • Inventor at Heart: During a brief break from gaming, Benzies lived in Los Angeles and spent time developing machines that suck water out of the air. He even had a large prototype in his garden capable of producing 1,000 litres of water a day.
  • Space Station Start: His first major project at DMA Design was as lead programmer for the quirky Nintendo 64 game Space Station Silicon Valley, released in 1998.
