At the time of her birth, she was the highest-ranking person in the British line of succession born overseas, being eighth in line.

Fittingly, with her being a highbrow member of the British royal family born in the United States. At the time of her birth, the U.K.'s then-Prime Minister, Boris Johnson was also American-born (in Manhattan, New York City).

In March 2023, her parents and Buckingham Palace announced that she and her brother Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor would use the princely titles they had become entitled to following the ascension of their grandfather King Charles III, and she was titled Princess Lilibet of Sussex.

The official website of the royal family was updated to refer to her as "Princess Lilibet of Sussex" on 9 March 2023. It was reported that any titles would be used in formal settings, but not in everyday conversations by her parents, preferring to use her birth name, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

Her parents, Harry and Meghan prefer to use her birth name, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor instead of Princess Lilibet of Sussex and to defer any final decision on whether she prefers to use her formal or informal name until she comes of age and is able to decide for herself.
