- Santram Varma was born 1921 as Santram Chawla in the Punjab Region of British India. He is one of the founders of Varma Films, best known for Sohag Raat (1948), Patanga (1949) and Badal (1951). Santram was married to Prakash, with whom he had four sons (Kishore, Aroon, Anil & Raj) and a daughter (Kiran). He died in 1975 in Bombay, India.
Santram is a patriarch of the Varma family, which includes members that have had careers in the Indian film industry as producers, distributors, actors, film directors, writers and editors. The Varma family began working in the film industry in the late 1940s and continues into the 2020s; the family has had a staying power that has extended to more than seven decades.
