- Biharilal Varma was born in 1905 as Biharilal Chawla in the Punjab Region of British India. He was one of the founders of production and distribution company Varma Films, best known for Sohag Raat (1948), Patanga (1949) and Badal (1951). He was married to Leelavanti, with whom he had five sons (Kuldip, Rajendra, Kishanlal, Satish & Ashok) and three daughters (Sudesh, Kamlesh & Sushma). He died in 1960 in Bombay, India.
Biharilal is a patriarch of the Varma family, which includes members that have had careers in the Indian film industry as producers, distributors, actors, film directors, writers and editors. The Varma family began working in the film industry in the late 1940s and continues into the 2020s for a staying power that has extended to more than seven decades.
