Biography

  • Alex Sono (1998, ZA) is a filmmaker, actor and musician based in Johannesburg. Alex's career began with acting at the age of three as he performed in several commercials and television shows. Throughout the years Alex has starred in several successful South African TV shows, including Jozi H, Rhythm City and Saints & Sinners and most recently the South African adaptation of Ugly Betty, UBettina Wethu. His passion for performance haw also drawn him to theatre production and performance, in 2019 Alex performed at the National Arts Festival, as a winner of the Wits O-Week Festival.

In 2020 Alex spent the first semester of his Honours in film at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden as part of Linnes Palme Exchange program. Alex's work as a filmmaker, includes Wits Film and TV award winning documentaries entitled "The Revolutionary Act" (2018) and My Father's Sun (2019).In 2021, his collaborative graduate film was selected for various festivals including the International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA). The year also saw him work an assistant director for the Joburg Theatre 60th Celebration under the Joburg Theatre Artistic director, James Ngcobo. Storytelling devices pulled from his filmmaking and acting contribute a great deal to his musical output, this results in experimental elements of world building through juxtaposing, blending and contrasting unlikely sounds, visuals and lyrical content.
