Biography

Soul Hooligan began in 1997, as a solo project for veteran hardcore producer Austin Reynolds (who had been Surburban Base's in-house engineer between 1991-1993). Under this moniker he released the first single 'Sweet Pea' (Freskanova, 1998). The track proved to be a club-level success, and Reynolds was required by his label to promote the single live. To this end he pulled in a couple of old friends from his hometown of Brentwood, Essex: Dave Jay, his previous collaborator from the Suburban Base days (in groups such as Phuture Assassins and Vibe Alive, who had also gone on to work on projects with the likes of Matrix and Wubble-U) and ex-Big 6 keyboardist James Sumner. The live collaboration went so well that the trio decided to carry on in a studio setting. Thus 'Music Like Dirt' was eventually released in 2002 by none other than Maverick Records, who had heard an early demo of the album and signed the group straight away. Soul Hooligan have since had tracks featured on films and TV programmes such as Driven (2001) and _"Six Feet Under" (2001) and contributed a track ('Evil Woman', featuring Diana King) to the latest Austin Powers movie, _Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002)_. They are currently in the studio working on ideas for their follow-up album.

Maverick Records head honcho Guy Oseary personally signed the UK based band to the US based label without meeting or even talking to any Soul Hooligan member, after Los Angeles DJ Jason Bentley played Oseary a demo of their track "Algebra".

Soul Hooligan's track "Algebra" was chosen for the widely seen HBO US ad campaign that featured before the last-ever episode of 'Sex & The City' (tagline: "HBO - You Do The Math"). Despite earning $50,000 for use of the track, the band never saw a penny as they were, by then, deeply in debt to their recording and publishing companies (Maverick & Warner / Chappell).
