Abbas Araghchi
Abbas Araghchi is an Iranian diplomat and statesman, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran.
Abbas studied at the School of International Relations, affiliated with the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he earned a bachelor's degree in international relations. He then continued his studies at the Islamic Azad University in central Tehran, where he earned a master's degree in political science. In 1996, Abbas defended his doctoral dissertation, 'The Evolution of the Concept of Political Participation in Twentieth-Century Islamic Political Thought', at the University of Kent in the UK.
In 1989, Abbas joined the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the early 1990s, he served as Chargé d'Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Iran to the Organization of the Islamic Conference in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In 1998, Araghchi became director general of the Institute for Political and International Studies and editor-in-chief of the journal Foreign Policy. From 2004 to 2005, Abbas served as dean of the School of International Affairs. Abbas headed Iran's diplomatic missions several times: in Finland (1999-2003) and Japan (2008-2011). From 2013 to 2021, Araghchi held key positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Deputy Minister for Legal and International Affairs, and Deputy Minister for Asia-Pacific and Commonwealth Affairs. In August 2024, Araghchi was appointed Iranian Foreign Minister under President Masoud Pezeshkian. His candidacy was approved by the Islamic Consultative Assembly on August 21.
