Biography

Steve Sharples

Overview

  • Birth name
    Stephen Sharples

Biography

  • Stephen Sharples is a prolific and versatile composer with a colourful personality and eventful life story. The son of a script writer and a prisoner of war survivor his up-bringing was never going to be what most people think of as normal.

Throughout his career he has worked in an impressive variety of genres from plain chant to punk. Perhaps his most notable foray into popular music being his stint with punk band The Fall in which he produced "The Marshall Suite" album including co-writing the track "Touch Sensitive" which went on to make £475,000 in synchronization. A sore subject as Sharples saw very little of this income even after winning the court case in which the ownership of the track was disputed.

In the 90's with band Crescendo he produced and co-wrote "Are You Out There", which spent 3 months at number 1 in the Mixmag chart, and reached number 20 in the UK National charts. In 2015 he became the musical director of the Secret Garden Party, a prestigious Dance Music Festival.

As a producer and writer he has worked with a huge number of artists including: Larry Love, Morten Harket, Emile Ford, Simon Standage, Simon Standage, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Russell Watson.

In the world of movies he is best known for his awarding winning contribution to the film Moulin Rouge! (2001), having written and produced most of the music specially composed for both the movie and the theatrical trailer.

For Agent Provocateur he co-produced with Mick Jones the album "Dirty Stop Out", featuring Bobby Gillespie, Nina Hagen, Les Rita Mitsouko, Sienna Miller, Rhys Ifans, Siobhan Fahey, Dot Allison and others.
