Biography

South Korean actor Im Sung-jae (often spelled Im Seong-jae), was born in Gwangju, South Korea.

Driven by a passion for acting, he dropped out of college at age 20 to join a theater troupe and perform on stage. Before transitioning into full-time screen acting, he spent time running his own advertising agency.

He considers award-winning actor Park Jung-min to be his ultimate career saviour. Park recognized his talent during his theater days and personally recommended him for the audition of his debut film, Sunset in My Hometown (2018). Im later signed with the same agency as Park. Top actors and directors like Son Suk-ku have publicly praised his immense acting depth, frequently citing him as a talent they eagerly seek out to collaborate with.

Known deeply for playing chilling antagonists and ruthless gangsters in hits like The Worst of Evil, D.P. Season 2, and Moving, he pivoted to a warm, sympathetic associate lawyer in the tvN drama Seocho-dong. He jokingly shared in interviews that this softer character was a huge relief for his parents, who finally didn't have to watch him commit fictional crimes on screen.
