Carol Welter

Carol Welter is a playwright, screenwriter, director, actor, and storyteller whose work blends classical theatrical tradition with imaginative, character-driven narratives. Carol Welter's creative journey began in England, where she studied theatre and toured the UK with Shakespeare troupes, honing a deep love for performance and storytelling. The daughter of Jamaican parents who immigrated to England after World War II, Carol grew up navigating --and observing the complexities of identity, belonging, and resilience. As one of the few Black students in all-white schools from infancy through high school, she developed a keen understanding of what it means to live at the margins. That perspective now fuels her writing.

With a background in classical theatre arts, Welter has worked across multiple disciplines including acting, directing, dramaturgy, set design, and screenwriting. Her writing often explores themes of transformation, social change, acceptance, and the hero’s journey, frequently centering on overlooked or unconventional characters. Her work combines humor, emotional depth, and fantasy with deeply human storytelling.

Welter is the author of several stage productions and literary works, including About Clarence, Cranes, and Who Is Phyllis Wheatley. A two-time Kennedy Award nominee for Dramaturgy, she has also published poetry and short fiction while continuing to develop projects for both stage and screen.

In addition to her creative work, Welter is passionate about the intersection of psychology, storytelling, and human connection. Her artistic philosophy emphasizes empathy, collaboration, and the transformative power of narrative.
